The other day I had a conversation with a fellow graduate, this person mentioned they wished they had been more involved in extra curricular activities while in school. This came from the pressures felt during interviews. This made me think of the following quote from Jay-Z (a legendary rapper and nearly billionaire entrepreneur).

“They read a bunch of words, I lived a bunch of lives.”

Let me pose this question – what good is knowing something if you do not have the means to apply it?

After seven years of post-secondary and being involved in many extra curricular activities, I can say with conviction that what I have done outside the classroom far outweighs, but they enhance each other.

Now I ask myself, “should my ‘extra-curricular’ activities stop when I’m done school.” Certainly not. I believe that life is about adventure and change; you should go from one stage in life to another growing into a new person. It is important to immerse yourself into multiple different activities for personal and professional growth.

Unlike the movies, we are multi-dimensional people. We can’t be “just a business person” and be happy. We are business people and musicians and sports enthusiasts and pet lovers and more.

Back to the school aspect, books are windows to others thoughts and lives – they are not the place where you learn to live. Stand out by learning from others successes and misfortunes, but also live through experience.
