After a conversation I had tonight mentoring a great leader whom has taken over my position leading the SIFE team at St. Lawrence College, I want to share a thought. What is the focus of your organization?

If your organization is focused on profits, why is that? Is that even the right thing to be focused on? Frankly from my perspective, if the focus is on the bottom line, it will sink the organization. This is a philosophy that I believe in to my core. When Microsoft started the goal was to get a computer in everyone’s hands, now it seems their focus has severely slipped.

If you have ever seen the TED Talk by Simon Sinek, “How great leaders inspire action,” then you will completely understand the following statement.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”

This is a fundamental marketing issue in todays market and something I see in the technology industry. Every company seems to communicate their features and benefits and not their values and beliefs.

This is the reason I believe the iPad will win against the competition because they communicate how is a tool that allows you to change the way you communicate, connect and how you work. A truly inspiring thought for your daily life. The competition explains things like how many applications you can use, the battery life or screen sizes; that’s a completely underwhelming thought.

This methodology of communication is also used by many managers and leaders as they communicate what needs to be done and not create a culture on the belief system of why everyone is following those in charge.

Building a system that provides a strong bottom line is due diligence that should allow the leader to focus on the reason and belief. Profits are a buy product of success, not success itself.

My goal is to empower businesses to be confident in creating the vision and executing a valuable online presence.

Not only that, but truly understand the value of how technology is beneficial when connecting with their customers in new profound ways. Serving the customer something of value and being rewarded through due diligence.

So let me ask you this, why does your company exist?
